Water House, the sixth volume in the Thailand Master House Series, written and documented by Nithi Sthapitanonda, presents an extraordinary residential project designed by Architects 49 House Design. Located in the green suburban landscape of Thawi Watthana, the house redefines contemporary living through a seamless integration of architecture, landscape, and water.
Set on a 17-rai plot once defined by agricultural land, the project was envisioned as a multigenerational family residence—one that offers comfort, openness, and a deep connection to nature. Over more than a decade of development, the homeowner and design team worked collaboratively to shape a living environment that balances privacy with expansive openness, creating a sanctuary away from the density of the city.
At the heart of the design lies a central pavilion—interpreted as the “heart of the house”—inspired by traditional Thai architectural principles. Surrounding this core, water becomes a defining element, flowing through ponds, reflecting pools, and expansive landscapes that extend toward the horizon. The spatial experience unfolds gradually, from a carefully choreographed arrival sequence to layered views of water, greenery, and sky.
The architecture responds thoughtfully to climate, site conditions, and long-term living needs. Elevated structures address flood risks, while open layouts invite natural light and ventilation. The integration of architecture, interior design, landscape, engineering systems, and art collection reflects a holistic approach to residential design at a rare scale.
More than a house, Water House is a comprehensive exploration of contemporary Thai living—where tradition, modernity, and nature converge. This volume serves as both an in-depth architectural study and a source of inspiration for those interested in large-scale residential design and integrated living environments.
