Baan Sri-inpun, the fifth volume in the Thailand Master House Series, written and documented by Nithi Sthapitanonda, presents a compelling journey of rediscovering life through architecture. The book tells the story of a Bangkok businessman who chose to leave behind urban life and settle in Pua District, embracing a quieter, more meaningful existence rooted in nature and local culture.
Designed by Yangnar Studio, the project is set within a lush mountainous landscape near the Thai–Laos border, unfolding across more than 16 rai of land. Over more than a decade, a cluster of houses has been carefully developed through a collaborative process between the homeowner and architects, grounded in extensive research into vernacular architecture—drawing from Lanna traditions, Tai Lue influences, and regional building wisdom across Southeast Asia.
The architecture reflects a deep commitment to sustainability and cultural continuity. Guided by the Sufficiency Economy philosophy, the design emphasizes simplicity, resourcefulness, and respect for local materials. Reclaimed wooden structures, traditional roofing techniques, and organic materials such as terracotta tiles, wooden shingles, and bamboo are thoughtfully integrated to create buildings that harmonize with their environment.
More than a collection of houses, Baan Sri-inpun represents a living archive of vernacular knowledge—where architecture responds to climate, landscape, and way of life. Through the careful documentation and narrative of Nithi Sthapitanonda, this volume offers valuable insights for architects, designers, and readers interested in sustainable design and the enduring spirit of Thai architectural heritage.
